Preparing for the Next Big Rescue Mission

Another busy week at Horse Plus Humane Society was filled with preparation, teamwork, and life-saving efforts as the staff geared up for one of their largest rescue missions of the year.
With the new wild horse training facilities nearly complete, the team put the finishing touches on the round pen and handling areas that will help safely work with incoming wild horses. Around the property, staff continued mowing and maintaining pastures, ensuring the land remains healthy and safe for the hundreds of animals in their care.
A Special Focus on Baby Arlo

Over in the vet barn, the team has been whipped up in a frenzy trying to get baby Arlo the nutrition he needs. Arlo’s mom, Sylvia, was thrown into a kill pen just two days before giving birth, leaving her too stressed to produce enough nutrients for her baby.
After a little trial and error with a messy mash, the team discovered Arlo’s secret: he prefers drinking his milk straight from a bowl!

An exciting update! To ensure Arlo gets the intensive, round-the-clock care he needs, he has been safely tucked into an AC-cooled trailer and sent to an amazing, seasoned Horse Plus adopter who is taking on the role of his personal bottle-feeding hero!
Arlo was safely transported to receive around-the-clock attention, giving him the best chance to grow stronger and thrive!
Intercepting the Pipeline

The threat of a screwworm crisis has the US borders highly monitored but the slaughter pipeline hasn’t stopped completely. Private routes are still moving horses into Mexico, making the team’s mission more urgent than ever.
Thanks to your incredible support, Horse Plus successfully intercepted 37 horses out of the slaughter pipeline!

As each horse arrived, the medical team performed examinations and evaluations to determine their immediate needs. One sweet 20-year-old Pony of the Americas mare came in with great teeth but a very unusual, moving subcutaneous lump on her neck. She is scheduled for an ultrasound with Doctor Jess to see what’s going on.

Sadly, rescue work also means making the hardest choices. One incoming mare arrived with a catastrophic, un-straightenable front leg injury from an old fracture. To take away her immense pain, the team provided her with the ultimate last act of kindness.
A Mission Made Possible by Supporters

Rescuing 37 horses is no small task and it would not have been possible without the support of the Horse Plus community. As the organization continues responding to changing conditions within the slaughter pipeline, the team remains committed to helping as many horses as possible.
Every rescue mission, every intake, and every second chance is made possible by supporters who believe that these animals deserve a better future!

This week was a powerful reminder that when people come together for a common purpose, lives can be changed. Thanks to the dedication of the staff, volunteers, adopters and supporters, 37 more horses now have the opportunity to experience safety, care, and hope.
We are infinitely grateful for your incredible love and support so please consider making a life-saving donation today to help us continue giving these beautiful horses the second chance they deserve!
